Pole Barns and Outbuildings Built to Last

A pole barn is only as good as the builder behind it. In a region where 70 mph winds are normal, snow loads are heavy, and temperatures swing 100 degrees between seasons, cutting corners on a pole barn doesn't save money — it costs you the building. We've seen it too many times: undersized posts, improper bracing, cheap fasteners, and structures that start sagging or leaking within a few years.

We build pole barns the right way. Every structure we put up is engineered specifically for the wind, snow, and seismic conditions of your property's location. We use quality lumber or commercial-grade steel, proper concrete footings, and fastening systems rated for our climate. The result is a building that's standing strong and looking good decades from now — not one you're patching and reinforcing every other year.

Whether you need a straightforward hay barn, a fully insulated shop, a horse facility with custom stalls, or a complete barndominium with living quarters, we handle the entire process — design, permitting, site prep, and construction. We build across Southeast Wyoming and Northern Colorado, and pole barns and detached structures are one of the most common projects we take on. This isn't a sideline service for us. It's a core part of what we do.

What We Build

Barndominiums

The fastest-growing building trend in our region — and for good reason. Barndominiums combine comfortable living quarters with functional shop, barn, or garage space under one roof. We build barndominiums from the ground up with full residential finishes on the living side and durable, practical workspace on the other. Open floor plans, vaulted ceilings, and the efficiency of a single structure make this an increasingly popular choice for rural property owners.

Equipment Barns & Shops

From simple cold-storage hay barns to fully finished, insulated workshops with concrete floors, electrical, and heating, we build functional outbuildings for every need. Farmers, ranchers, hobbyists, and car enthusiasts across Wyoming and NoCo trust us to build shops they'll use every day for decades.

Horse Barns & Equestrian Facilities

Custom horse barns with stall configurations tailored to your operation — tack rooms, wash bays, hay lofts, feed rooms, and covered riding areas. We understand ventilation, drainage, and layout from an equestrian perspective, and we build facilities that are safe and practical for both horses and handlers.

Detached Garages & Storage

Oversized garages, RV storage, boat storage, and general-purpose buildings. Whether you need a simple two-bay detached garage or a four-bay deep structure with a loft, we build to your specifications in wood or steel with full engineering for your location's conditions.

How We Build Your Pole Barn

Step 1: Consultation & Site Visit

We start with a conversation about what you need — size, purpose, layout, and budget. If you have a property, we'll visit the site to evaluate terrain, access, soil conditions, and utility availability. This meeting is free and gives both of us a clear picture of the project before anything else moves forward.

Step 2: Design & Engineering

We develop your building's design based on your requirements and engineer it for the specific wind, snow, and seismic loads at your property's location. You'll review the design, choose materials (wood frame vs. steel, roofing type, siding, doors, etc.), and approve a detailed estimate before we proceed. No vague quotes — you'll see every line item.

Step 3: Permitting & Site Prep

We pull all required building permits through your county and manage any site preparation — grading, access, concrete footings, and utility coordination. If your property needs well or septic work alongside the pole barn project, we coordinate that too.

Step 4: Construction

Our crew handles the full build — footings, posts, framing, roofing, siding, doors, windows, and any interior buildout. For barndominiums, that includes full residential construction on the living quarters side — plumbing, electrical, HVAC, insulation, drywall, flooring, and finishes. We keep you updated throughout and maintain quality standards at every phase.

Step 5: Walkthrough & Handoff

We do a complete walkthrough with you to make sure every detail meets your expectations. Doors operate smoothly, electrical is tested, finishes are inspected, and any punch list items are resolved before we consider the project done.

Why Our Pole Barns Are Built Different

Engineered, Not Guessed

Wood or Steel — We Do Both

Wood or Steel — We Do Both

Every pole barn we build is engineered by the numbers — specific to your property's wind exposure, ground snow load, and seismic zone. We don't use generic plans and hope they hold up. Your building gets a structural design that accounts for exactly where it sits and what it needs to withstand. That's the difference between a building that lasts 10 years and one that lasts 50.

Wood or Steel — We Do Both

Wood or Steel — We Do Both

Some builders only work with one material. We build in both wood frame and commercial-grade steel, and we'll help you choose the right option for your project based on budget, intended use, aesthetics, and long-term maintenance. Wood offers a traditional look and is often more cost-effective for smaller structures. Steel provides greater clear-span widths, lower maintenance, and superior durability for larger buildings. We'll walk you through the tradeoffs honestly.

Full-Service From Dirt to Done

Full-Service From Dirt to Done

Full-Service From Dirt to Done

We don't just show up and frame a barn. We handle the complete project — site evaluation, design, engineering, permitting, site prep, concrete, construction, and any interior buildout. For barndominiums and finished shops, that includes all mechanical systems, insulation, and finishes. One contractor, one contract, no gaps.

Built for Real Use

Full-Service From Dirt to Done

Full-Service From Dirt to Done

We build pole barns for people who actually use them — ranchers storing hay and equipment, horse owners who need functional stalls, mechanics who work in their shops year-round, and families living in barndominiums full-time. We design around how you'll use the building daily, not just how it looks on paper. Door placement, traffic flow, ventilation, lighting, and electrical layout are all planned with real use in mind.

Where We Build Pole Barns

We build pole barns, barndominiums, and detached structures across Southeast Wyoming and Northern Colorado, including:

Wyoming: Cheyenne • Laramie • Burns • Pine Bluffs • Carpenter • Hillsdale • Horse Creek • and rural properties throughout Laramie and Albany Counties

Colorado: Wellington • Livermore • Severance • Ault • Berthoud • Windsor • Eaton • Fort Collins area • and acreage properties throughout Larimer and Weld Counties

Pole barns are one of our most-requested projects, and we've built them on everything from flat prairie lots to foothill properties with challenging terrain. If you've got land and a vision, let's talk.

Pole Barns — Common Questions

Please reach us at chase@browtinebuilders.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Pole barn costs vary widely based on size, materials, and level of finish. A basic unfinished equipment barn or hay storage structure typically runs $15 to $30 per square foot. A fully insulated shop with concrete floors, electrical, and heating runs $30 to $60+ per square foot. A barndominium with complete living quarters can range from $80 to $200+ per square foot on the residential side, depending on finishes. We provide detailed, line-item estimates specific to your project so you know exactly what your building will cost before construction begins.

A pole barn (also called post-frame construction) uses large wooden posts or columns set into the ground or on concrete piers as the primary structural support, with the walls attached to the frame. A metal building (pre-engineered steel) uses a rigid steel frame with metal wall and roof panels. Both are excellent building methods — pole barns tend to be more cost-effective for smaller to mid-size structures and offer a more traditional look, while steel buildings provide wider clear spans, lower long-term maintenance, and better performance for larger commercial or agricultural buildings. We build both and can help you decide which is right for your project.

In most cases, yes. Both Laramie County in Wyoming and Larimer and Weld Counties in Colorado require building permits for pole barns and detached structures. There are limited exceptions for very small structures — in Larimer County, for example, non-habitable accessory buildings under 200 square feet generally don't require a permit, but they still must meet setback requirements. We handle the full permitting process for every pole barn we build so you don't have to navigate the county building department on your own.

A barndominium — sometimes called a "shouse" (shop-house) — is a structure that combines residential living quarters with barn, shop, or garage space under one roof. The exterior typically looks like a large pole barn or metal building, but the interior includes a fully finished home with all the features you'd expect — kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, living areas, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical. Barndominiums are one of our most popular builds. They're cost-effective, energy-efficient, and ideal for rural property owners who want to live and work on the same footprint. We design and build barndominiums from scratch, fully engineered and permitted as residential structures.

Yes — this is essentially the same thing as a barndominium. We build pole barns with fully finished living quarters ranging from a simple studio apartment above a shop to a full multi-bedroom home attached to a barn or garage bay. The living quarters are built to residential building code standards including insulation, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical, while the shop or barn side is built for its intended use. We handle the permitting for both the residential and non-residential portions and engineer the entire structure as one integrated building.

Timeline depends on size, complexity, and whether the building includes finished interior space. A basic unfinished pole barn or shop can be completed in 4 to 8 weeks once construction begins. A fully insulated and finished shop typically takes 8 to 12 weeks. A barndominium with complete living quarters runs 6 to 12 months depending on the size and finish level — comparable to a custom home timeline on the residential side. Permitting and site prep add additional time before construction starts, and we'll give you a realistic timeline upfront based on your specific project.

Yes. Many of the pole barns we build are on rural properties with no existing utility connections. We coordinate electrical service runs from the road, or design buildings to operate on solar and generator power for off-grid properties. If the building includes living quarters, we also handle well and septic installation. We assess all of this during our initial site visit so the full scope and cost are clear from the start.
